NFPA 70B

NFPA 70B details preventive maintenance for electrical, electronic, and communication systems and equipment -- such as those used in industrial plants, institutional and commercial buildings, and large multi-family residential complexes -- to prevent equipment failures and worker injuries.

NFPA 70B provides guidelines for preventive maintenance of electrical, electronic, and communication systems in industrial plants, commercial buildings, institutional facilities, and large residential complexes. Its goal is to prevent equipment failures and worker injuries. Unlike the previous recommended practice, the 2023 edition is now a mandatory standard that requires the development, implementation, and operation of an electrical maintenance plan (EMP).

The standard mandates that electrical equipment must be inspected at least once a year, with some equipment requiring more frequent inspections. This helps protect people, equipment, and processes from electrical system failures. Additionally, the Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace focuses on preventing hazards such as shock, electrocution, arc flash, and arc blast to ensure worker safety.

Compliance Steps:

  • Develop an Electrical Preventive Maintenance written program
  • Conduct electrical equipment condition assessment
  • Perform remediation identified by assessments
  • Update Single-line drawings, Arc Flash Study, Coordination Study, Short Circuit Analysis
  • Determine maintenance intervals
  • Update EMP to verify compliance requirements
  • Audit your EPM every 5 years
